Office Depot announced Tuesday that it has selected Boca Raton for its corporate headquarters following its merger last month with Illinois-based OfficeMax.

The office-supply company, which has been in South Florida since 1986, said its decision was the result of evaluating several factors including costs, lease obligations, taxes, government incentives, and the ability to add employees.

"Selecting the headquarters location is a critical step toward integrating our two companies," said Roland Smith, chairman and chief executive of Office Depot, Inc.

"Both Florida and Illinois have many positive attributes, but our analysis concluded that Boca Raton provides the best platform for us..." he said.

Office Depot, which already is under a multi-million dollar economic incentives contract with Florida, didn't say whether Gov. Rick Scott offered any more money from his Quick Action Closing Fund to keep the company in the state. 

The company will remain in its current 625,000-square-foot corporate campus located at 6600 N. Military Trail in Boca Raton, which it says has ample space to accommodate associates who will relocate from Illinois.

Office Depot has about 1,700 employee in Boca Raton while Naperville, Ill.,-based OfficeMax has about 2,000 at its Naperville, Ill., offices and distribution centers. 

Smith said the company would select "the best talent from both locations" to take the company forward.
