Broward's political, lobbying establishment gets behind Jim Waldman's Senate campaign

State Rep. Jim Waldman has one pretty clear message regarding his 2016 candidacy for Florida Senate: Everyone’s behind me, so nobody else ought to bother running.

(Memo to former State Sen. Skip Campbell, who held the seat until he was forced from office by term limits in 2006, has mused about a comeback attempt.)

Of course that’s not what Waldman, who faces term limits in 2014 and was just elected to a one-year term as chairman of the Broward Legislative Delegation, actually wrote in the invitation for a campaign fundraiser.

But given the host and the host committee, there’s no other conclusion. The Coconut Creek Democrat has lined up Broward’s many of Broward’s most influential Democratic players as supporters, including elected officials and the cream of the Broward lobbyist corps.

The event, a “backyard picnic” and fundraiser, is at the home of Property Appraiser Lori Parrish. Top name on the host committee: Former Attorney General Bob Butterworth. (For some reason people always leave out his other big “former” title: Broward sheriff.)

The host committee includes Bill Scherer, the lawyer and big-time fundraiser for Republicans. (He was just a host for a big fundraiser for Gov. Rick Scott).

Also on the host committee: state Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Parkland, the term-limited official Waldman plans to succeed; Senate Minority Leader Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale; House Minority Perry Thurston, a Broward Democrat; incoming Florida House Minority Leader Mark Pafford, D-West Palm Beach, and state Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat who represents a northwest Broward district.

And union leaders Walt Dix, Jeff Marano and Dan Reynolds; Barbara Effman, president of the West Broward Democratic Club, developer Austin Forman, and Bail bondsman Wayne Spath.

Plus lobbyists Ron Book, David Ericks, Candice Ericks, Bernie Friedman, Alan Koslow, Bill Laystrom, Dennis Mele, John Milledge, Michael Moskowitz (father of Jared, above), Tom Panza

And … County Commissioners Marty Kiar, Stacy Ritter and Tim Ryan; mayors Jeff Nelson of Southwest Ranches, Daniel Stermer of Weston, Frank Talerico of Margate and Becky Tooley of Coconut Creek.

There are also 19 others, including nine city commissioners and council members.
