Last week: The University of Miami’s upset win over the University of Florida in front of 76,000 at Sun Life Stadium was the big story in college football, both locally and nationally. The win catapulted Miami back into the national spotlight and into the national rankings. joining Florida State as a viable contender for a berth in the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl. It also marks the first time that Florida’s long-time football playing schools — Miami, Florida and Florida State — were all ranked since October, 2010. The other big sports story was the opening of the NFL season, and the Dolphins winning their opener on Sunday at Cleveland.

Looking ahead: Nationally, the big college football story will be whether Alabama, which won the national title right here in South Florida last year at the 2013 Discover BCS National Championship Game, will avenge its only defeat from 2012 when they play Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M on the road. The local sports story that will have people talking will be the Dolphins traveling to Indianapolis to try and open the season with two wins in a row for only the second time in the last 10 years.

Sept. 8

Last week: The continuing debate over a U.S. response to the situation in Syria, as well as that of the International Community.

Looking ahead: I believe the same story that was the story of the week this past week will continue to be at the top of everyone's list in the week and probably weeks ahead.
