1. Earth Day weekend: Not just another marketing opportunity

Earth Day weekend is upon us. I can tell because my email inbox is jammed with pitches for "green" products and corporate campaigns: Clothing made from recycled plastic bottles; natural skin care products; hybrid auto accessories, even pet waste collection bags.

  3. Columbia not thinking forward with bridge

Howard County is looking at a too-expensive, overbuilt transit bus bridge over U.S. 29 between Oakland Mills and Columbia Town Center ("In Columbia, bridge is sought to unify towns," April 24). A too-occasional bus won't help the main problem —...

  5. As gasoline prices rise, Obama takes aim at alternative-energy critics

With rising oil prices creating a drag on the economy and his re-election effort, President Barack Obama mocked Republican critics of his alternative-energy policy Thursday, comparing them to the "cynics and naysayers" who didn't believe the Earth was round or that television would take off.

  12. Franchot: Gas tax increase won't save the bay

Of all the arguments I have heard to support an increase in Maryland's gas tax, the oddest by far is the notion — as expressed recently by Karen Hosler — that doing so would be good for the environment ("Can a Gas Tax Increase Save the Bay?" Feb. 26). Proponents of this theory suggest that, by raising gas prices to levels that would be painful if not impossible for working people to bear, Annapolis lawmakers could force countless families to overhaul their daily routine by leaving their cars in the driveway. Or failing that, inspire them to head to their local car dealerships to trade their current vehicles in for newer, "greener" models.

  16. In battle for young voters, Romney should play it uncool

President Barack Obama's re-election largely hinges on his ability to play young voters for suckers -- again -- and whether Mitt Romneywill let him.
