1. A dramatic rebirth

Sun Architecture Critic
The show begins long before the curtain rises. That's all one needs to know to appreciate the dramatic transformation of Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre, which reopens Tuesday after a $62 million restoration and modernization. The architects and artisans...

3. How is the new Riverfront Theater?

The intersection of Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street is not, if we're being frank, one of the city's more picturesque stretches. So it comes as a surprise to see, tucked away on the northeast corner — just behind Freedom Center, where the Chicago Tribune is printed daily — one of the summer's newest theater venues. Believe it or not, the locale is more appealing than the address might suggest.

7. Riverfront Theater tent opening to host circus, music and other events

Chicago is to have a big new entertainment venue this summer — a 70-foot-tall, 22,000-square-foot tent that will seat as many as 2,500 patrons who will be served up a variety of populist live shows, including tributes to Elton John, Michael Jackson and ABBA, and an adult-oriented circus known as "La Soiree." The tent, dubbed the Riverfront Theater, is being pitched next to the Chicago Tribune Freedom Center, 650 W. Chicago Ave.

9. Pop Culture 101: Final Exam 2011

Were you paying attention to the pop culture in 2011? Here's a little test to make sure you knew what was important in the past year. Don't worry. It's multiple choice.

11. Wedding do-not-play lists

When Joe and Christine Re compiled their Do Not Play list for their April wedding, they nixed the overplayed (Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling"); the perennially annoying ("Celebration" by Kool & the Gang); reminders of exes (John Mayer's "Your Body Is a Wonderland").

18. London: A first-timer's guide

This is my first trip to this city of lords and chimney sweeps. As I was raising four children, everyone else seemed to slip away to London except me. The London I've finally discovered is as rumpled and comfy as old corduroy (which I like) and as stylish and smug as the sassiest fashionistas (which I don't).

20. 'Mamma Mia!' dances into theaters

MY 9-YEAR-OLD son asked me the other morning why I was dancing around the breakfast table singing "Take a Chance on Me." I don't usually sing in the morning. I definitely don't dance. And I didn't know I knew any ABBA songs (I've never actually bought an album), but there they were -- "S.O.S," "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia" -- bouncing around in my subconscious, like unmoored neurons, suddenly revitalized by an infusion of "Mamma Mia!," the big-screen adaptation of the musical, which I'd seen the night before.
