  1. For Loyola grad, the Madness feels glorious

In August or September, it would still be madness.

  7. Like/dislike: Drunk Monk

It all started in a freezing cold warehouse in early January. Three old friends, all with different music backgrounds, got together for their first band practice. They didn’t know what genre they were going for other than surf rock, but before the first hour was up they had their first song written. By the end of the practice, they had two. Since then, the sound of Drunk Monk has become something else entirely. “To me, it’s a kind of psychedelic surf doom jazz,” says Jacob Honaker, 27, the band’s guitarist. Jacob, along with fellow band members Apostolos Alexandratos (27; drums) and Jeff Rettberg (24; bass), has been playing shows in Baltimore since August. They’ve recorded a handful of songs in their rehearsal room, and have put four of them onto a demo. Drunk Monk is planning to head into a recording studio soon, but before they do you can catch the band on Friday at The Night of 100 Elvises. Here, Jacob sits down with b to talk about trash TV, homegrown food and why he loves Baltimore.

  13. Baltimore actress Julia Pickens reveals the woman behind the roles in 'Like/Dislike'

She’s played in indie horror films, in plenty of tough girl roles, and with multiple theater groups, and she recently “signed a contract in blood” (her words!) with the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. Julia Pickens, 27, has been acting since she was 14 and earned her degree in theater at Towson University. Now, she’s taking on the role of Mandi in the play “Asking Questions,” a Baltimore Playwrights Festival production at Fells Point Corner Theater, premiering Friday. Check out this local actress’s tastes.
