1. Watch International Space Station fly over Maryland on Thursday

Another good opportunity to watch the International Space Station fly over Maryland occurs Thursday. With clear skies in the forecast and the spacecraft expected to be particularly bright, it could be a very good show.

  9. A rocket scientist's lament

I still remember — although details are somewhat cloudy now, the gist of it is still clear as bell — the night when my teen and toddler brother and sisters, my father, some workers on the farm and I sat around a fire, on a somewhat cold night, in the middle of a jungle, and, with an occasional roar of a panther in the background, listened to a decrepit old radio. It was the late 60's in Western India, on my father's farm, and we were all very excited.

  15. Federal workers propose waste-cutting ideas in White House contest

  17. Notable discovery: Dinosaur footprints at NASA Goddard

Description: Two 110-million-year-old footprints that a massive plant-eating dinosaur and, perhaps, its offspring left behind has been uncovered on the campus of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. That age dates it to the Cretaceous Period, the last of the Mesozoic Era. NASA Goddard facilities officials are not revealing the exact location of the footprint but said it isn't going anywhere — moving it would violate laws protecting archaeological and paleontological artifacts found on federal lands.

  19. A smile for the ages

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If so, I have one for you. It came to mind last week when I heard of the death of Neil Armstrong, famed for being the first to set foot upon the Moon. His boyish face appeared on many photos through the years, as a Korean fighter pilot, civilian test pilot and eventually as one of the second group of astronauts selected by NASA. After John Kennedy's challenge to land on the moon before decade's end, one of the men in this second group that called themselves the "Next Nine" or the "Nifty Nine" — in contrast to the "Original Seven" astronauts — was destined to be the first to touch the lunar surface. And Mr. Armstrong became the one.
