NASA's Apollo program landed a man on the moon just eight years after President Kennedy set that goal in a speech before Congress. Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong made the "giant leap for mankind" on July 20, 1969. It was the first of six Apollo missions to land on the moon. The others were Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 .
