Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration

Highlights

Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration is an aquarium located in Mystic, Conn. It first opened in 1973, and has since become known for its oceanographic and deep-sea archeological research. However, Mystic Aquarium's main claim to fame is being one of only four aquariums in the world to house an intact Stellar Sea Lion. It is also the first aquarium to attempt artificial insemination on a Beluga Whale. Dr. Robert Ballard founded the Institute for Exploration, which features maps and models from Ballard's exploration of the RMS Titanic and the Black Sea. Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration are divisions of Sea Research Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit institution.  Show more »
