National Aquarium Baltimore

Highlights
National Aquarium Baltimore

The National Aquarium in Baltimore is located at the city's Inner Harbor. The idea for the aquarium was first seriously considered in the mid-1970s when city officials fought for an aquarium to be a main component of Inner Harbor redevelopment. Ground was broken in 1978, and the aquarium opened its doors in 1981. Since the Baltimore National Aquarium's opening, it has become a destination for visitors to the Inner Harbor. About 1.6 million people annually visit the aquarium, with 70 percent of them from out-of-state. The aquarium says it is Maryland's largest paid tourist attraction. The aquarium houses more than 10,500 specimens of at least 560 species. In 2005 the aquarium opened an expans...  Show more »

In 2005 the aquarium opened an expansion, Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes, which is dedicated to animals that inhabit Australia, including crocodiles, turtles, birds and fish. One of the best-known and most attended attractions at the National Aquarium is the dolphin show, which features the aquarium's Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins, along with their trainers, performing tricks and educating spectators about the mammals. The aquarium also has a new 4-D Immersion Theater that combines 3D film with sensory effects including mist and wind.  « Show less

  1. Ravens fans: Treat people with class

I'm not a major sports fan, and I have never been to a Raven's game, yet I feel I must apologize to Laura Dosanjh for the ugly behavior she witnessed recently at M&T Bank Stadium (Readers respond, Nov. 4). Baltimore has always taken it's sports rather...

Wait a minute, where in the ceremony program did it say Schaefer speaks? No where, but no matter. William Donald Schaefer was going to speak. He was going to slowly get up to the lectern and speak to the crowd of more than 1,000 at the Inner Harbor on...

  7. John Shields brings fresh thoughts to trout

Fish can be "delish" for supper. But unless shoppers make careful seafood choices, there might not be enough fish to eat in coming years.

  9. What's better than a carousel?

Baltimore's vintage Inner Harbor Carousel could be replaced by a pirate-themed theater, a miniature golf course, a traveling Ripley's Believe or Not exhibit or a Ferris wheel.

  23. Ravens' Chester is the total package

When most of us think about the personal lives of NFL players, the images we conjure up tend to be a celebration of excess. We think of large men living larger lives - fancy cars, big-screen TVs and sprawling houses. We don't think about energy-efficient light bulbs or reducing one's carbon footprint.
