Have you ever wondered what would happen when a longtime program director for developmentally disabled people teams up with 12 restaurants chefs?
Well, the result is a very cool 2013 Michiana Chefs’ Best Kept Secret Calendar that features area chefs and restaurants in which they “strike a pose.”
Corvilla, a nonprofit organization, exists to provide services to meet the needs of and improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities.
What was great about writing this story was the fact that I had a chance to join residents from Corvilla as they sampled pastries at Indulgence Pastry Shop & Cafe on Edison Road last week. Corvilla residents Joe and Amy were excited when chef Garrick Trotter walked out carrying a tray filled with pastries.
Joe’s eyes were totally fixed on the tray and he wouldn’t take his eyes off of it. Amy waved excitedly as she ate cheesecake.
“The cheesecake was my favorite,” she said. “I ate it all, including the cherry.”
The idea for the calendar was that of Diana Dolde, the program director for Corvilla Inc.
“I was trying to figure out a way to showcase all the great chefs in the community,” said Dolde. “I started going around to different restaurants and bakeries to see if the chefs might be interested.
“Some stated they were too busy, but overall most of them were good sports and agreed to pose for the calendar and share their favorite recipes and culinary tips along with a photo.”
Indulgence Pastry Shop & Cafe owners Sean Wojtkowski and Trotter have owned their business for seven years. The two friends worked at Notre Dame together before opening their shop.
“My specialty in culinary school was bakery and pastries,” said Wojtkowski. “When I bake my chocolate chip cookies, it’s sort of a stress reliever for me and just knowing we built this place ourselves gives us a sense of accomplishment. Because we are doing well, it is important to give back, so we offered to help Corvilla with their fund- raising calendar.”
Indulgence is one of 11 participating restaurants. The others are Uptown Kitchen, Tippecanoe Place, The Mark Dine & Tap, Olfactory Hue Bistro, Mattson’s Meat Masters, Corndance Tavern, Cuisology, Fitzgerald’s of Sawyer, LaSalle Grill and Lucchese’s Italian Restaurant.
“The sale of the calendar will raise funds for Corvilla,” said Dolde. “But it will also provide the recipients with a unique, product with coupons that will allow you to enjoy and sample the restaurants during 2013.”
The calendar will be available for a $20 donation around the end of November. It can be purchased at the restaurants or by calling Corvilla at 574-289-9779 or by e-mailing email@example.com. The coupons provide a value of more than $100.
Trotter added: “You all need a calendar; why not ours?”
