  1. Middle East mess was born in the U.S.A.

Titillation over David Petraeus and political posturing over Susan Rice aside, here is the most important unasked question: Why did we foster regime change in Libya and Egypt that gave the Muslim Brotherhood control in the latter and produced a gaggle of Islamic militias in the former?

  3. Ehrlich is wrong on U.S. policy in the Middle East

Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s recent column ("The Obama doctrine: Passivity where leadership is needed," Oct. 14) continues to present a flawed ideological position on the Middle East when a heterodox view is in order. We entered the Middle East and North...

  7. Hoping for change in Syria

    Victor Davis Hanson
Remember when President Obama used to warn Syria's Bashar al-Assad to stop his mass killing and step down? Muammar Gadhafi's dictatorship had then just collapsed under Western bombing. The murders of Americans in Benghazi and the subsequent postwar...

  9. Review: 'Strange Rebels' by Christian Caryl

The rebels of Christian Caryl's "Strange Rebels" are a motley lot. They include Margaret Thatcher, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and his followers, Pope John Paul II, Deng Xiaoping, and the Afghan insurgents who fought back against the Soviet invasion of their country. The most obvious common thread that unites these stories is the fact that the stories are roughly simultaneous: All of them are centered in one way or another in 1979. This was the year of Thatcher's ascendancy to power, the Iranian revolution, the Pope's pilgrimage to Poland, the invasion of Afghanistan, and the start of Xiaoping's sweeping reforms of the Chinese economy.

  17. Ben Affleck's mission accomplished in 'Argo' ★★★ 1/2

The propulsive hostage thriller "Argo," the third feature directed by Ben Affleck, just plain works. It's heartening to encounter a film, based on fact but happy to include all sorts of exciting fictions to amp up the suspense, whose entertainment intentions are clear. The execution is clean, sharp and rock-solid. It's as apolitical as a political crisis story set in Iran can get. But "the first rule in any deception operation is to understand who your audience is."

How is your memory working this morning? A little rusty, you say. I want to take you back 33 years to 1979 and ask you to remember a few things. If you’re not old enough to recall back that far, some review of that era just might be worthwhile....
