The Bethlehem where Jesus was born may be on the other side of the world, but that doesn't make the Lehigh Valley version any less festive. It was Christmas Eve 1741 when the Moravian founders named their settlement after the famous biblical city in Judea. Nearly 200 years later, in 1937, the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce adopted the nickname "Christmas City, USA" with the first lighting of an eight-point, 60-foot-high star — now an iconic symbol illuminated year-round — on the top of South Mountain.
