Established as a diocese in 1843, and an archdiocese in 1880, the Archdiocese of Chicago originally covered the entire state of Illinois. Even as five separate dioceses broke off from the province between 1853 and 1948, it continued to grow. Between 1879 and 1923, an industrial boom in the city sparked a heavy influx of Southern and Eastern Europeans to join the already existing Irish and German flock. Between 1915 and 1965, Chicago emerged as the nation's largest diocese with a reputation for innovative leadership. Between 1915 and 1965, Chicago emerged as the nation's largest diocese with a reputation for innovative leadership. The archdiocese, currently led by Cardinal Francis George assisted by six auxiliary bishops, serves more than 2.3 million Catholics in Cook and Lake Counties. It has 364 parishes, 217 elementary schools, 39 secondary schools, five college and universities and 47 cemeteries. Currently 830 active and retired diocesan priests serve the area, with nearly as many ordained by religious orders.
