Chicago archbishop has first meeting with Pope Francis

Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich (BLAYZ' SOO'-pihch) has met with Pope Francis. The Archdiocese of Chicago says the two met Friday at the Vatican's guesthouse and the pope's residence. It was their first meeting. In a written statement released Saturday, Cupich says he thanked the pope for selecting him to lead Chicago's more than 2 million Catholics. Cupich took over from Cardinal Francis George, who died of cancer in April. Cupich is at the Vatican this week for the Mass where he will receive a pallium, the woolen vestment that popes present to archbishops. Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
