The Basilica was designed by John Carroll, the country's first Catholic bishop, and Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who was involved with the design of the United States Capitol. Carroll said that he wanted the design of the Basilica of the Assumption to reflect American architecture rather than the more somber designs in European cathedrals. Construction of the basilica took place from 1806 to 1821. The Basilica of the Assumption has been instrumental in many milestones for the Catholic faith. Three Plenary Councils met at the church and helped shape several monumental decisions, including calling for the evangelization of Native Americans and African-Americans following the Civil War. In 1972 the structure was deemed a National Landmark, and in 1993 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated it a National Shrine. Notable visitors to the Basilica include Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa.
