  1. For churches, busy Christmas season 'tiring … but so uplifting'

Immediately before the first of eight Christmas Eve services begins at his church, the pastor of St. Louis Parish will seek out his favorite chair and briefly, yet blissfully, nod off.

  3. CNN's John King takes it to a higher gear with Iowa eve analysis

CNN received a lot of praise for its "Magic Wall" technology during its 2008 coverage. And John King, who worked the touch-screen electoral maps, like no one else was rightfully celebrated in connection with it by me and many others.

  5. Religious bigotry in Ocean City?

For 20 years, the annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in Ocean City has been a generally quiet affair. But this year the event's sponsors invited as guest speaker a former high-ranking Pentagon official notorious for his characterization of Muslims as idol-...

  7. Romney's trump card: 'electability'

New Hampshire Republicans are practical people.
New Hampshire Republicans are practical people. As I traveled around the state this past week, voters who said they supported Mitt Romney in Tuesday's presidential primary consistently offered two reasons for their choice. One was Mr. Romney's resume:...

  9. Tebow wars: Give it a rest

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is an evangelical Christian. He is devoted to his faith in a very public way, and that, as much as his perplexing play on the football field, has made him a cultural lightning rod. The wise heads of football insisted before this season that he is not actually much of a quarterback, that he had a weak, inaccurate arm and a devotion to a style of play that works in college (where he was a star for the University of Florida) but not in the NFL. But his base of fans, seemingly devoted to him primarily because of his religion and only secondarily because of his play on the field, were vocal in demanding he get his chance. And he did, leading the once woeful Broncos to the playoffs on the back of one improbable fourth-quarter comeback after another.

  11. In Santorum, evangelicals seek another earthly savior

A group of conservative evangelical leaders met in Texas last weekend and endorsed a Roman Catholic for president. Given the history of evangelical antipathy toward the theological underpinnings of the Roman Catholic Church, that in itself signals a remarkable evolution (pardon the word), along with a considerable amount of political pragmatism.

  13. Santorum and the mythic power of the zealots

++++++++++++++++++++ || || || || ++++++++++++++++++++ If you think Rick Santorum is a weird, pious wackadoo, try being a female walking around certain ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Israel with your ankles showing. Mr. Santorum's near-victory in...

  15. Bound together by different faiths

This summer, the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, preached on the U.S. Capitol grounds to promote his 2011 world peace initiative and related quest to reconcile the world's great religions. I've always been fascinated by his very simple but often profound writings. The Dalai Lama views his worship space to be "his brain and his heart" and his philosophy to be "kindness." From all I've read about him, he's a great example of one who "walks his talk."

If your party nominated a generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon, would you vote for that person?
If your party nominated a generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon, would you vote for that person? Earlier this year, Gallup pollsters asked that exact question, and 76 percent of those who responded said yes, they would....

  19. Local Lutherans honor founder

Despite the rain, snow and blustery wind Saturday, a crowd of more than 100 robed clergy and their congregants surrounded the 18-foot-tall bronze statue of Martin Luther that overlooks Lake Montebello and recreated the original unveiling service from 75 years ago.

  21. Separation of church and state is as important for ministers as it is for politicians

It was said of Al Smith, a Roman Catholic, that if he won the 1928 presidential election he would take orders from the Vatican and not uphold the Constitution.
It was said of Al Smith, a Roman Catholic, that if he won the 1928 presidential election he would take orders from the Vatican and not uphold the Constitution. John F. Kennedy famously confronted that anti-Catholic prejudice in a 1960 speech to the...

  23. An interfaith road trip to promote understanding
