  1. A plan that helps retirees and Maryland

The next several years will see a flood tide of a new kind of retiree — the rollover retiree. Millions of baby boomers will be transitioning into retirement without the comfort of the old-fashioned monthly pension check, but rather with a lump sum rollover check from their employment 401(k) or 403(b) retirement account. Ready or not, each rollover retiree will start a new career as an investor. Most will not be ready.

  3. Living in Maryland is far superior to living in Texas

Having just moved back to Maryland after 23 years in Dallas, I think I can bring some insight as to Texas' merits vs. Maryland. ("A Texas remedy for what ails Maryland jobs," June 22) First, there is the myth that Texas is cheaper to live in than other...

  5. Let's talk about the meaning of fairness

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama talked about Americans paying their fair share in taxes. For most of my life, I thought that I had a reasonably good idea about what "fair" means — except for that period when my children...

  7. Winning million$ in one of the big jackpots is winning the lottery for governments, too

It's fairly well-known that the jackpot for a winning multi-million dollar lottery ticket isn't necessarily what it says on the billboards the state lottery system updates regularly, like the one on Business Route 1 at the Bel Air Bypass split. Still, it...

  9. Tax policy on the fly

Disinclined as we may be to pity the plight of those making more than $500,000 a year, the state Senate, in its attempt to raise more revenue from such top earners, has gone too far. The Senate has adopted a plan that appears to be unique among the 50 states and would violate a cardinal rule of income tax policy, which is that a dollar earned should not cost more than a dollar in taxes. When the House of Delegates takes up the budget, it will have some work to do to clean this mess up.

  11. The flat tax fraud

The so-called "flat tax" is all the rage among Republican presidential hopefuls. Herman Cain was the first. Now, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich have come up with their own flat-tax proposals.

  14. Why pay more to file your taxes?

If you are a low- to moderate-income taxpayer and you shell out any money to have your taxes done, you're likely paying too much.

  16. The GOP's 2012 election strategy: Wreck the economy

It is time to dispel a few myths. First, we are not overtaxed but under-taxed. Federal personal and corporate tax receipts expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product are at 14.1 percent, the lowest rate since 1951. The Bush tax cuts have been in...

  18. Washington's pig roast

Even the staunchest admirers of corporate CEOs — you know, the star-struck junior executives who buy the ghost-written biographies and how-to-manage books — will have to admit that there's something downright cathartic about seeing oil company executives grilled by a congressional committee when gasoline prices hit $4 per gallon.

  20. In Howard, seeds of optimism

Just as the first green sprouts of spring give rise to optimism for better days ahead, there are hopeful economic signs in Ellicott City, where Howard County Executive Ken Ulman this week proposed a budget that — wait for it — anticipates growth.
