  1. Gas tax increase advances in House of Delegates

The House of Delegates turned back a series of amendments Wednesday night seeking to derail a transportation revenue bill backed by Gov. Martin O'Malley, a strong indication that Democratic leaders have enough votes to raise the state's gas tax for the first time in more than two decades.

  7. Rosapepe backs hike in gas tax to boost infrastructural investment

  9. The GOP confronts its 'stuffy old men' problem

Give some credit to the Republican National Committee for at least recognizing that the Grand Old Party has a bit too much "old" and not enough "grand." Its recently released 100-page, post-election analysis, put together by veteran party advisers, points out quite correctly that Republicans are stuck in a rigid, 30-year-old ideology.

  11. A test for Md. gun bill

Gov. Martin O'Malley's gun control bill faces a crucial test this week, when it is expected to receive committee votes in the House of Delegates. Although the legislation passed the Senate with strong support — and despite polling showing the vast majority of Marylanders approve of its key elements — it has produced some grumbling in the House, and not just from Republicans, who have stood unified in opposition to the measure. Lawmakers are likely to consider a host of amendments to the legislation, some of which are reasonable and some of which are not.

  13. Ending executions in Maryland

Having won approval in both chambers of Maryland's General Assembly, a landmark bill to abolish the state's death penalty awaits only Gov. Martin O'Malley's signature before becoming law. It is a tremendous political and moral victory for Mr. O'Malley, a long-time opponent of capital punishment who campaigned for a repeal during his first term only to come up short.

  15. Top Democrats seek votes to raise gas taxes

With three weeks left in the General Assembly session, Gov. Martin O'Malley and legislative leaders have begun the painstaking process of rounding up the votes to raise taxes on gasoline — a move so unpopular it hasn't been done here since 1992.

  23. Don't force drivers to subsidize transit

Once again, Virginia has beaten Maryland to the punch regarding taxes on business and consumers. Virginia eliminated its gas tax completely and replaced it with a 3.5 percent sales tax on the wholesale price of gasoline. Gov. Martin O'Malley's new tax increase proposal would reduce the gas tax rate 5 cents but add a sales tax to the retail price of gasoline and diesel, resulting in a 63 percent increase in the tax on gas and a 90 percent increase in the diesel tax.
