Cook County Democratic leaders slated Todd Stroger to replace his father on the general election ballot after his father suffered a stroke one week before the March 2006 Democratic primary. Despite the illness, John Stroger beat Forrest Claypool in the primary but retired from office that summer. Former County Commissioner Bobbie Steele, a Chicago Democrat, fulfilled the remainder of John Stroger's term before retiring. Todd Stroger was serving as the Chicago alderman for the 8th Ward when he was elected to the County Board presidency. Mayor Richard Daley appointed Stroger to that position in 2001 to replace Ald. Lorraine Dixon, who had died. Prior to his tenure on the City Council, Stroger served as a state representative, first winning election in 1992. Stroger has previously worked for the investment banking firm SBK Brooks as well as in government jobs with the Chicago Park District and Cook County government. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Xavier University in New Orleans. Stroger and his wife, Jeanine, have two children, Hans and Claire.
