Summary

On January 13, 1990, L. Douglas Wilder became the sixty-sixth governor of Virginia and the first elected African-American governor in U.S. history. Wilder was overwhelmingly elected to serve as mayor of Richmond, the state capital, in November 2004. Wilder was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame on Feb. 26, 2007, at the Martin Luther King Historic Site in Atlanta.
