  1. Progress on immigration

Just when Washington looked like it was completely preoccupied with the scandals, real and imaginary, swirling around the White House, a group of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate managed the unexpected (and, these days, extraordinary): They agreed on something. The vote Tuesday night in the Senate Judiciary Committee to forward to the floor a massive overhaul of the nation's immigration system was, to be sure, a small step and doesn't guarantee success in the full Senate, much less the House of Representatives. But it is, at least, a hopeful sign that gridlock in this divided government is not inevitable.

  3. Immigration deformed

There's the story of a woman with five kids who was asked: If she had to do it all over again, would she have five children?
There's the story of a woman with five kids who was asked: If she had to do it all over again, would she have five children? "Yes," she said, "just not these five." That's the way I feel about the immigration "reform" bill introduced by the Senate's...

  5. Immigration bill is no compromise

When only one of the extreme sides of each political party is hollering against a bipartisan agreement on any bill, no doubt that side is the only one getting hosed. A true bipartisan bill gets both sides upset. So now begins the spin game by trying to get the few remaining conservative Republicans left in the Senate and all the tea party conservatives in the House to play ball with this amnesty bill ("Getting to yes," April 18). Unfortunately, this bill tries to do everything in one swoop. That is not what the American people asked for.

  7. Getting to yes on immigration reform

The sweeping immigration bill outlined by a bipartisan group of eight senators this week represents the most comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. immigration system in more than a quarter-century. It's also probably Congress' best chance this year to forge a compromise on an issue it hasn't touched since 2007. But that doesn't mean lawmakers still won't find a way to flub it.

  13. A 'path' to meaningful reform

The road to meaningful U.S. immigration reform will no doubt prove rocky and difficult, but at least Washington has taken its first big step on the most critical part of the route — down the so-called "path to citizenship" that now has bipartisan support in the Senate. That's quite a change since 2010 when so many in the GOP invoked the term "amnesty" as a dirty word.

  17. Arizona lawmakers learn firsthand of social media's power to drive news

    Cronkite News Service

  19. Can Marco Rubio seduce his fellow Republicans on immigration reform?

The attempted seduction of Sen. John Cornyn by immigration reformers is akin to my effort to get Neil Patrick Harris, the best emcee ever of any awards show, to sing at my next birthday. No matter how much I offer him, he'll turn me down. That's the...
