  1. Commentary: In a small town's square, peaceful democracy in action

Over the weekend, thanks to an annual camping trip I take with my son, Nick, to a location near Camp David, I had a front row seat to a display of democracy in action. There's a good chance you heard about the event in question: The G8 gathering of world...

  3. Feds, police in spat over G-8 summit costs

In a standoff that might require delicate diplomacy to resolve, officials in Western Maryland are pressing the federal government to reconsider its refusal to help pay for local security costs for this week's G-8 summit at Camp David.

  5. Don't leave hunger off the global agenda

When the leaders of the globe's biggest economies — the G8 — meet at Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains this weekend, they will have a plate full of problems: banking and liquidity and bonds and loan guarantees and such. Somewhere on...

  7. Rachel Marsden: Lame attempts to shut off Afghan heroin spigot have been futile

A Russian source recently brought an obscure but disturbing article to my attention. Published last month by a little-known online journal called the Oriental Review, the piece, "Active Endeavour And Drug Trafficking," proposed that not a single gram of heroin has been confiscated on the Mediterranean Sea since the inception of NATO's Operation Active Endeavour, a maritime operation launched a month after the Sept. 11 attacks with the mission of "monitoring shipping to help detect, deter and protect against terrorist activity."

  9. More domestic production won't lower gas prices

The argument for increasing oil production in the U.S. to decrease gas prices at the pump has sparked passionate debate, but it undervalues the influence of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). In recent years, OPEC has shown an...

  11. Increased domestic oil production is crucial for the United States

Rafael Corredoira's understanding and explanation of the U.S. petroleum markets is ludicrous. ("More domestic production won't lower gas prices," April 20.) I would need a full page to rebut his assertions. He is as astute as Nancy Pelosi and her view...

  13. U.S. oil production can destroy OPEC

University of Maryland business professor Rafael Corredoira's claim that higher domestic oil production won't affect prices is flat wrong ("More domestic production won't lower gas prices," April 20). The only way that a cartel, such as OPEC, can exist...

  15. Protesters, police prep for G-8 summit at Camp David

In the little town of Thurmont (population not quite 6,200), the recession has taken a heavy toll on Main Street, but things are picking up as residents prepare for next month's G8 Summit at nearby Camp David. The Cozy Country Inn has been busy booking...

  17. Afghanistan: what 'victory' looks like

Where is Afghanistan policy headed at this crucial moment? As the nation's excellent if unsung war commander, Gen. John Allen, testifies on Capitol Hill this week, and as Republican presidential aspirants continue to attack President Barack Obama from both the left and the right on the subject, these questions are especially timely. Will the president soon be tempted to say that with Osama bin Laden dead (on the positive side), but with the Afghan and Pakistani governments still very hard to work with and the insurgency still resilient (on the negative side), it's simply time to declare victory, cut our losses and get the forces home fast?

  19. Overstated Iranian 'threat' puts U.S. on path to war

A neocon joke, at the beginning of the Iraq war, was: "Anyone can go to Baghdad. Real men go to Tehran." It wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now. Unfortunately, those "real men" who want to wage war on Iran are making so much noise that they may prevail — and hardly anyone is pushing back.

  21. Change the World Bank needs

Few people on the street may be familiar with the World Bank. Yet, it plays a critical role in the U.S. effort to engage the world through its contribution to economic development in poor and post-conflict societies. As current World Bank President...

  23. U.S. and Pakistan: Uneasy allies

News that the U.S. has resumed drone strikes in Pakistan, killing at least three suspected militants last week in the tribal areas of North Waziristan along that country's border with Afghanistan, could hardly come at a more delicate moment for U.S.-Pakistani relations. Rather than signal an improvement in ties between the two uneasy allies in the war against Islamic insurgents, it may end up pushing the two sides even further apart — or, in the worst case, precipitating a rupture.
