1. As referendum looms, gay plays open theater season

  3. Burns backs off bid to silence Ravens player

After drawing national attention for his attempt to muzzle a football player who supported gay rights, a Maryland delegate walked back his position Sunday and said Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo should be allowed to speak out in favor of same-sex marriage.

  5. A Raven stands up for equality — and free speech

It's been a tough week for Maryland politicians who misspeak badly and then have to correct themselves. First, there was Gov. Martin O'Malley and his lame excuses for his "no" to the "are you better off than four years ago" question while defending President Barack Obama on national television, and then Rep. Roscoe Bartlett invoked the Holocaust in explaining the federal student loan program's allegedly unconstitutionality, a truly outrageous comparison for which he eventually apologized.

  7. 'The Temperamentals' fight for their rights at Rep Stage

There is reason to be concerned that a didactic drama will be too, er, didactic, but John Marans' "The Temperamentals" explores the early history of the gay rights movement with a generally winning blend of pathos and humor.

  9. Ayanbadejo responds to politician looking to silence him on gay marriage stance

Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo said Friday he was surprised that Maryland Del. Emmett C. Burns Jr., a Democrat from Baltimore County, sent a letter to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti urging him to silence his outspoken player, who has long been a vocal proponent of same-sex marriage.

  15. College Park should think bigger than Chick-fil-A

The waffle fry wars have hit College Park, with hundreds of people signing a petition to get the Chick-fil-A restaurant booted from the University of Maryland's Stamp Student Union over the company president's anti-gay marriage activism. A petition on the website change.org says "It is clear that Chick-fil-A does not represent the values embraced by the University of Maryland community. Allowing such an organization to continue to operate in the [student union] runs counter to the spirit of equality that the university claims to champion." It's heartening to see concern on campus for the issue of marriage equality, but an online petition urging the university to break its lease with a fast food restaurant isn't going to accomplish much. To make a difference, the students need to take much more direct action.

Some staff and students are calling on the University of Maryland to boot Chick-fil-A off the College Park campus, making it the newest front in the war between gay-rights activists and the fast-food chain. An online petition calls Chick-fil-A a "bigoted...

  19. The false politicization of the Family Research Council shooting

We do not yet know exactly what led a young man to carry a semi-automatic pistol into the lobby of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian advocacy organization, and to instigate a confrontation that left a security guard with a gunshot wound to the arm. But the suspect's volunteer work for a Washington gay rights group, early eyewitness accounts that he made statements critical of the FRC's mission, and reports that he was carrying a bag of Chick-fil-A — a recent touchstone in the gay marriage debate — have instantly framed his action in a political context.

  21. The Republican case for same-sex marriage

Marylanders have an important decision to make this Election Day: whether or not to affirm their belief in the traditional American principle of equal rights for all, or instead to continue a system of special rights for some. A "yes" vote on Question 6 would sustain the Maryland legislature's recent historic vote that gave gay and lesbian couples to same right to marry as heterosexuals. A "no" vote would repeal marriage equality, perpetuating the unequal system of granting all the legal privileges and perks of marriage to heterosexual couples only.

  23. Chick-fil-A gay marriage flap is overblown

It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Chick-fil-A CEO Dan T. Cathy is an opponent of gay marriage or that he has donated to the cause. The family-owned chain has a strong tradition of conservative Christian leadership — it's no coincidence that the restaurants aren't open on Sundays. It should also not have come as much of a surprise to Mr. Cathy that his recent public comments about his stance would cause a backlash at a time when public opinion polls show a steadily growing acceptance of the idea of gay marriage among American voters. There have been calls to boycott the restaurant chain, and conversely organized attempts to support it with large-scale eat-ins on Wednesday. In an age of social media, the flap has blown up out of all proportion.
