The Stop Online Piracy Act was a U.S. House bill introduced as a protection for content creators but ultimately viewed by the public as a federal mandate for online censorship. The bill's 2012 defeat was seen as one of the first significant lobbying victories for online service providers like Google and Wikipedia.
