Maryland freshman Dion Wiley impressing in European basketball tour

Incoming Maryland men's basketball freshman Dion Wiley has been one of the top players during Global Sports Academy's 2014 Men's Basketball Goodwill tour across Europe. With just one game remaining, Wiley has led his squad in scoring in each of the first four matchups with various European opponents. Wiley is the only Terp on a team that also includes players from North Carolina State and Mount St.Mary's. Against Basics Melsele of Belgium, Wiley had 11 points and four rebounds. He followed up that performance with a 14-point, three-rebound display against Germany's SG Sechtem. Wiley scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds against Rhein Stars Cologne of Germany and finished with 18 points against Ostend of Belgium. Wiley and the team will face Belgium's Gembo in the tour's final game. … Maryland and Georgetown could play in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games in the 2015-16 season, according to an ESPN report. The annual series will feature teams from the Big East and Big Ten conferences. The programs have not met since 2008.

US Lacrosse and Major League Lacrosse named Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Matt Abbott the Sportsmanship Player of the Year, as voted on by the league's game officials. Abbott had eight goals and eight assists this season, and the six-year veteran is known for his positive behavior on and off the field. "This is a huge surprise, but I am incredibly humbled and honored to receive this award," Abbott said in a release. "This game has given me plenty of opportunities and I always try to play the game a certain way. I have a lot of respect for the game and always try to play it the right way. I am grateful to US Lacrosse and the MLL for honoring me."

Men's college basketball: Loyola Maryland will take a seven-day trip to Montreal and play five exhibition games against Canadian universities and club teams this month. The Greyhounds will compete against four Canadian Interuniversity Sport teams — University du Quebec a Montreal, Universite Laval, McGill University and Concordia University — and a club team, Brookwood Elite, during their trip.

College football: Morgan State will hold an open scrimmage at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hughes Stadium.

Men's college soccer: UNC-Wilmington junior forward Colin Bonner (Reservoir) was voted preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association by the league's coaches.

Women's college soccer: Mount St.Mary's picked to finish ninth in the Northeast Conference's preseason coaches' poll.

College volleyball: Jeffrey Liu has joined UMBC as an assistant coach. Liu most recently served as a volunteer coach and DataVolley intern with the U.S. women's national team.

Men's golf: Will Coleman of Kensington birdied the first two holes Monday and finished with a 4-under-par 68 at Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach, Fla., for his fifth victory on the Golfslinger.com Tour.

American Professional Basketball League: James Johnson has re-signed with the Bay Area Shuckers for the 2014-15 season, the team announced. Johnson was a regular in the Shuckers' starting lineup as a rookie last season.
