1. From Sun Magazine: 'My Donald'

July 22, 2011
July 22, 2011 He was 49 and on his way to political greatness. She was 22 and picketing City Hall mostly for the fun of it. It took hot pants to bring them together. Paired with white go-go boots and Jeanne Bell's lithe young physique, the red short-...

5. Lawyers say gun ruling likely to withstand appeal

Constitutional lawyers said Tuesday that a recent federal court decision overturning a portion of Maryland's gun-control law will likely be upheld on appeal and called the ruling groundbreaking given the liberalism of the state from which it came.

7. Drop the 'two-war' plan

As defense strategists at the Pentagon carry out their review of how to make roughly $400 billion in cuts over 10 years, and Congress considers the possibility of reductions twice as large as required by the supercommittee's failure to reach agreement, one clear change in policy is appropriate: It is time to drop the longstanding assumption that U.S. ground forces must be capable of fighting two overlapping regional wars. Rather, ground-force planners should adopt a "1+2" framework, planning for one major war together with two smaller (but perhaps longer) multinational stabilization missions.

9. Demise of a centrist nominee dream

That pop you may or may not have heard the other day was the bursting pipedream of a centrist presidential candidate outside the establishment parties. The organizers of a group calling itself Americans Elect decided to close shop after failing to find anyone who would qualify to be its standard-bearer in November.

11. What Santorum wants, what Romney needs

In the spring of 1980, the race for the Republican presidential nomination got nasty. The front-runner, Ronald Reagan, said his main challenger,George H.W. Bush, wasn't a real conservative. Mr. Bush went on the attack, accusing Mr. Reagan of peddling "voodoo economics" and "a list of phony promises."

13. Wanted: The second best man or woman for the job

With his nomination as the Republican candidate for president all but wrapped up, Mitt Romney now faces the challenging task of selecting a running mate. What was once a fairly ho-hum matter (the running gag in the 1931 Gershwin musical lampooning Washington politics, "Of Thee I Sing," is that nobody pays attention to the vice president anyway) is now regarded as a defining moment of a presidential campaign.

15. Carjacking murder of Pam Basu subject of former county cop's book

No one who lived in Howard County 20 years ago is likely to have forgotten the horrendous carjacking and murder of Pam Basu. On Sept. 8, 1992, the Savage mother was taking her 2-year-old daughter to her first day of nursery school when two men pulled her from her car. Struggling to rescue her daughter, Basu became entangled in a seat belt and was dragged to her death.

17. The case for Romney

Years ago, a friend told me a story from her days living in South America. The movie "Wayne's World" had come out, and she went to see it. She spoke English, but it was interesting to read the Spanish subtitles.

19. Is the GOP handing the election to Obama?

The last time a Republican candidate for president defeated an incumbent Democrat running for reelection, the primary returns were a lopsided affair. Ronald Reagan won convincingly in New Hampshire and South Carolina (after George H.W. Bush took Iowa) and went on to capture nearly 60 percent of the GOP vote in a three-candidate field.

21. Lessons learned in Iraq, Rwanda

23. Influential Harford Community College leader O'Connell dies

Considering the influence he had on Harford County's only institution of higher learning, Alfred C. O'Connell's death last month drew little notice in a community where he lived for many years and left a huge imprint, according to a longtime colleague and...
