  1. The most famous umbrella since Neville Chamberlain went to Munich

    The Baltimore Sun
The public appetite for trivial distraction has always extended to our chief executives. I remember the minor uproar when Lyndon Johnson lifted a beagle by the ears. There was extensive commentary on Richard Nixon's taste for cottage cheese and ketchup....

  3. President Biden? History says no

I read with interest Jules Witcover's recent column regarding Vice President Joe Biden ("Could Biden benefit from Clinton's handling of Benghazi?" May 14). He infers that the Benghzai scandal could cost Hillary Clinton the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, paving the way for Mr. Biden to become his party's nominee.

  5. Bill Clinton still turning on the charm

When Bill Clinton took the podium to address the country in January 1993, I was moved to tears. Here, then, was my first president.
When Bill Clinton took the podium to address the country in January 1993, I was moved to tears. Here, then, was my first president. My parents had had all the presidents up to that point. Here was a man of my generation. Married to the working mother of...

  7. Out of the White House and onto the dole

In this era of huge federal debt and fiscal dysfunction, it's less than heartening to learn from the Congressional Research Service that the nation's four living former chief executives got a total of $3.7 million in pensions and operating expenses last year from Uncle Sam, aka the American taxpayer.

  9. U.S. and Russia can reduce nuclear threat

The Sun observed in a recent editorial that President Barack Obama's call to reduce the threat of nuclear war "could not have been more timely" ("Avoiding Armageddon," Feb. 18). It would be impossible to agree more with that sentiment.

  11. Remembering Richard Ben Cramer and his magnum opus

An old reporter often begins his daily routine by turning to the newspaper's obituary page with mild trepidation, fearing another friend has gone to that great newsroom in the sky. So it was this week in reading of the death in Baltimore, at only 62, of Richard Ben Cramer, arguably the best writer of a presidential campaign chronicle ever.

  13. Two cheers for rebranding

Ever since Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, there's been a lot of talk about how the Republican Party needs to "rebrand" itself.
Ever since Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, there's been a lot of talk about how the Republican Party needs to "rebrand" itself. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal wants, among other things, for the GOP to stop being "the stupid party." Rep. Paul...

  15. The presidential power trap

As Barack Obama prepares to be sworn in for the second time as president of the United States, he faces the stark reality that little of what he hopes to accomplish in a second term will likely come to pass. Mr. Obama occupies an office that many assume to be all powerful, but like so many of his recent predecessors, the president knows better. He faces a political capital problem and a power trap.

  17. Can we finally close the gun show loophole?

Whether it's the indelible horror of the massacre at Newtown, Conn., or the tone-deaf response of the National Rifle Association and its allies who have shown themselves so hysterical and paranoid on the subject of gun rights, the public's hunger for action on gun violence shows little sign of weakening.

  19. Democrats try to keep us in the dark

In response to letter writer David Drake ("Voters see through the GOP smoke screen," Jan. 9), he seems to fail to realize that there can be no public sector without the private sector jobs that generate the money for it to exist in the first place....

  23. Fiscal cliff compromise signals trouble

When push came to shove, Republicans and Democrats came together for a last-minute bi-partisan compromise on the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of automatic spending cuts and tax increases that would have plunged the nation back into recession. The deal passed the Senate overwhelmingly after marathon negotiations between Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden. Just eight senators voted against it, and although it technically came after the midnight deadline, the New Year's holiday afforded Congress the chance to finalize the deal before the markets — or the general public — had time to react. House Republicans balked at the deal, but as of last night, House Speaker John Boehner planned to bring the Senate bill up for a vote, and it appeared possible that it could pass on the strength of most Democrats and some Republicans.
