  1. The case for Romney

Years ago, a friend told me a story from her days living in South America. The movie "Wayne's World" had come out, and she went to see it. She spoke English, but it was interesting to read the Spanish subtitles.

  3. Is the GOP handing the election to Obama?

The last time a Republican candidate for president defeated an incumbent Democrat running for reelection, the primary returns were a lopsided affair. Ronald Reagan won convincingly in New Hampshire and South Carolina (after George H.W. Bush took Iowa) and went on to capture nearly 60 percent of the GOP vote in a three-candidate field.

  5. Lessons learned in Iraq, Rwanda

Letter writer Paul R. Schlitz Jr. can't seem to grasp the fact that an acknowledgment of Iraq's potential to harbor weapons of mass destruction doesn't necessarily indicate current agreement with the decision to invade, nor does it require someone to...

  7. Countdown to Iowa

Although the first voting for presidential delegates is still four days off in Iowa, the political crystal-ball gazers are already speculating which Republican candidates will survive and which will fall off the cliff into oblivion.

  9. The Ron Smith legacy: How to write, how to live, how to die

For virtually all the time I spent in politics, my main function was to craft words for someone else.
For virtually all the time I spent in politics, my main function was to craft words for someone else. And, for a long time, I was pretty good at it. In fact, I got so good at it that, when I finally decided I wanted to start opining under my own name...

  11. Drop the 'two-war' plan

As defense strategists at the Pentagon carry out their review of how to make roughly $400 billion in cuts over 10 years, and Congress considers the possibility of reductions twice as large as required by the supercommittee's failure to reach agreement, one clear change in policy is appropriate: It is time to drop the longstanding assumption that U.S. ground forces must be capable of fighting two overlapping regional wars. Rather, ground-force planners should adopt a "1+2" framework, planning for one major war together with two smaller (but perhaps longer) multinational stabilization missions.

  13. Influential Harford Community College leader O'Connell dies

Considering the influence he had on Harford County's only institution of higher learning, Alfred C. O'Connell's death last month drew little notice in a community where he lived for many years and left a huge imprint, according to a longtime colleague and...

  15. Anne Arundel officers seek handicapped parking violators

It was just after noon on a recent weekday, the parking lots at the Annapolis Westfield Mall were already full, and a woman in a dark sedan weaved through the swelling traffic, looking for a place to park.

  17. A Republican leader goes his own way

Tennessee Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander caused a ripple on Capitol Hill last week by announcing he will drop out of his party's Senate leadership to pursue a more independent course, which would seem to be a break from the GOP's my-way-or-the-highway solidarity.

  19. Soviet fall and Arab Spring

Twenty years ago, tens of thousands of Russians took to the streets of Moscow, just as Egyptians, Tunisians and Syrians have this year — rejecting the old order, demanding freedom and democracy. That August, the Russian democrats prevailed because their will was greater than that of those who plotted the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The dynamics of the Arab Spring are strikingly similar.
