  1. Now, the voters decide key races, ballot questions

After months of being bombarded by slick advertising, celebrity endorsements and candidate pleas, Maryland voters will go to the polls today — in large numbers, according to one estimate — to have the final word.

  3. Campaign's over, time to vote

Having just observed dozens of my fellow citizens standing in line for more than an hour to vote, I started to feel good about the country again. Some 430,000 Marylanders took advantage of five days of early voting this year, so many that Sandy Rosenberg, the veteran state delegate from Baltimore, says he'll be filing a bill in the next legislative session to expand the opportunities for early voting.

  9. Mitt Romney as president would be a disaster for the country

I applaud Thomas F. Schaller's column on President Obama's modest background ("The virtues of a president with humble origins," Oct. 31). The last thing this country needs is another arrogant son of a rich man who lives on a different planet than the rest...

  11. MSNBC really is more partisan than Fox, according to Pew study

In writing about the Pew study released today, I was struck by the big story of how negative coverage on several levels of presidential politics had become.

  13. Obama has failed the nation

I grew up in a Democratic home. My Dad was always very aware of what was happening in government. We have copies of letters Dad wrote to the politicians of his day and the responses he received. Dad kept a chart on the fridge of all the local, state and...

  15. Hillary in 2012? It could happen

A number of news reports have suggested the possibility of the presidential election ending in a draw — both candidates garnering 269 electors. You need 270 to win.

  17. The missing issue: gun control

Every year, some 31,000 Americans are killed with guns; nearly 340,000 more are victimized in gun-related crimes, with more than 73,000 of those treated in hospital emergency rooms for nonfatal gunshot wounds. The rate of firearms-related homicide in the U.S. is 20 times that of the next 22 richest nations combined, yet measures to reduce the loss of life and the enormous economic and social costs of gun violence have become a virtual non-issue in this year's political campaign season. Neither President Barack Obama nor challenger Mitt Romney appeared willing to risk even talking about renewing a ban on assault rifles with large-capacity magazines — like the one used in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting this year — when the subject was raised by a questioner at the second presidential debate.

  19. Romney-Ryan economic plan a disaster

The Romney/Ryan economic "plan" is like the hair-of-the-dog "cure" for a hangover: Have another drink! After the Bush administration tax cuts led us to the brink of a depression, Mitt Romney is proposing more of the same, with no credible strategy to...

  23. Obama and the single girl

As if it weren't enough that Lena Dunham, the 26-year-old writing/directing/acting phenom who started a revolution this year with her HBO series "Girls," scored a $3.5-million book deal and has been granted the unofficial but unimpeachable title of "voice of her generation," she also appears to have won the presidential election — or at least to have been one of the driving forces behind the guy who did.
