  1. The GOP tax hike

Unless House Republicans come to their senses, it now seems likely that about 160 million Americans are about to get a tax increase that amounts to $1,000 for the average household and could knock down U.S. projected economic growth next year (already expected to be modest) by 25 percent.

  3. Why the GOP primary isn't like Obama vs. Clinton in '08

Republican wishful thinkers like to rationalize away the damage being inflicted on their party by the intramural mudslinging among its unimpressive field of presidential candidates. After all, they note, in 2008 Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clintonwent at it pretty hot and heavy, and their party won the election anyway.

  5. The high court's dangerous positions

Dan Rodricks' recent column ("Justice Breyer, the supreme explainer," Oct. 13) points to a historically important incident which exposes the real danger inherent in the Supreme Court's decision-making power, politically speaking. In the Bush v. Gore...

  7. McConnell wrong to criticize prosecution of terrorists in civilian courts

On Wednesday evening, I heard a good portion of Sen. Mitch McConnell's Senate address, in which he lambasted President Barack Obama for bringing terror suspects into the USA for trial and punishment in civilian courts and prisons, rather than trying...

  9. Trying terror suspects in the U.S.: Tough and just

The debate over how the U.S. deals with suspected terrorists captured outside the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan flared up again last week when the Obama administration announced charges in New York against a Somali man with alleged ties to militant groups in North Africa and the Middle East. The move directly challenges a ban imposed by Congress last year that prohibits the government from transporting Guantanamo Bay detainees captured overseas to this country for trial in civilian courts. The case is also likely to revive long-running controversies over the fate of the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, the role of military commissions in trying terrorist suspects and what rights detainees have during interrogations.

  11. Horse breeders saddled with tax scrutiny

The battle over the federal budget has been playing out slowly in Congress for weeks, but it came galloping toward Maryland's thoroughbred farms recently in the form of a proposed tax increase.

  13. Boehner holds the key to debt limit talks

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's proposed Plan B for raising the debt ceiling — a classically congressional solution to a problem in that it accomplishes little but to shift accountability away from the legislative branch — is a terrible idea. It is terrible substantively, because it allows Washington to avoid any hard decisions about getting its fiscal situation under control, and it's terrible politically because it is a Trojan horse for President Barack Obama and a poison pill for tea party Republicans. The fact that it may soon seem like the best option is a testament to how close to the brink the nation has been driven by the culture of irrationality that has gripped a large swath of the Republican Party.

  15. Debt crisis could have outsized effect on Maryland

Bracing for the loss of a steady paycheck is becoming something of a routine for Frank Silberstein. A statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau and a union steward for the American Federation of Government Employees, Silberstein said the pitched battle...

  17. This time with feeling: The GOP needs to do a retake on its debt limit rhetoric

A lot of conservatives are having fun at President Obama's expense after his latest gaffe. In the midst of testy debt-limit negotiations last week, Mr. Obama told House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, "Don't call my bluff."

  19. Is the GOP taking its inspiration from 'Animal House'?

What do you do in the face of looming disaster? In the movie Animal House, the character of Otter memorably suggested the situation "absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part."

  21. Deficit impasse can be solved — if Congress looks out for the people and not just the rich

How pathetically sad and disturbing that the financial stability of our nation is in such a precarious, perilous state, and our credit rating is now being threatened by two top rating agencies, Moody's Investors and Standard and Poor's. The quick fix is...
