3. 'New Year's Eve' drops the ball on good storytelling

Let's hope your New Year's Eve is better than the movie titled "New Year's Eve." This hectic ensemble comedy has so many interwoven story lines and exudes so much synthetic good cheer that it leaves you feeling exhausted long before midnight strikes.

  5. Tea party, 'Occupy' don't stack up with '60s protests

Once again, rage in the streets has captured the nation's attention, as it did during the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights revolution of the 1960s. Now it is the turn of the tea party and Occupy Wall Street movements. But the latter two have not achieved the numbers, the intensity or the success of first two.

  7. Time for 'Occupy' to grow up

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his counterparts in several other cities may have done the protesters of the "Occupy" movement the biggest possible favor by kicking them out of the parks where they have erected tent cities for the last several weeks. Many protesters in New York; Oakland, Calif.; Portland, Ore. and other cities where the encampments have been dispersed are vowing to keep their round-the-clock protest going despite police orders, but that would be a mistake. They should take this opportunity to start a new, more pointed phase of their movement.

  13. 'Perp' walk: Unfair to defendants?

For defendants in high-profile criminal hearings, the so-called "perp walk" is one of the more distasteful traditions of American jurisprudence. The news media are alerted to a time and location when the alleged perpetrator will be walked to the courthouse so they can photograph him or her en masse — often in handcuffs and surrounded by police.
