  1. Commencement speakers: the rude, the unfunny and the insightful

Commencement season is the college equivalent of the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Commencement season is the college equivalent of the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Institutions from the Ivy League to the local community college scramble to lure the shiniest star they can to their podiums on graduation day. And the match-ups...

  3. 'CBS This Morning' the thinking person's way to start the TV day

I have been meaning to write a big piece about CBS News and "This Morning" for two weeks. But other assignments took precedence, so now I'll have to write a much smaller piece a day late after the network has already celebrated 100 days of its revamped and journalistically-amped 'Early Show' with Charlie Rose and Gayle King.

  5. Demise of a centrist nominee dream

That pop you may or may not have heard the other day was the bursting pipedream of a centrist presidential candidate outside the establishment parties. The organizers of a group calling itself Americans Elect decided to close shop after failing to find anyone who would qualify to be its standard-bearer in November.

  7. Super PACs: How did the Supreme Court not see this coming?

Maybe what this country needs on the Supreme Court is a real politician or at least a sensible political scientist or two. Perhaps they would help the court's majority understand how it has allowed unlimited big-donor money to contaminate and almost destroy our politics.

  9. Generational nonsense at commencement time

This is the season of generational twaddle. At graduation ceremonies across the country, politicians, authors, actors and businessmen take to the stage to tell young people they are fantastic simply because they are young. This year, the ritual is more pathetic than usual because there's a presidential election in the offing. And because the current occupant of the White House won in 2008 in no small part due to his success with the "youth vote," he is desperate for them to repeat their blunder.

  11. Bush's pithy endorsement of Romney

Former President George W. Bush uttered his endorsement for president the other day as an elevator door was closing on him. To a question shouted by a reporter, he was said to have answered, simply, "I'm for Mitt Romney," and that was it.

  13. Same-sex marriage seals Obama's fate as a one-term president

Barack Obama made himself a one-term president last week by telling ABC, "I think that same-sex couples should be able to get married."
Barack Obama made himself a one-term president last week by telling ABC, "I think that same-sex couples should be able to get married." Up till now, he was politically savvy, saying his position was "evolving." But in repealing the military's "don't ask,...

  15. The tea party's war on common sense

Tea party advocates in Indiana are congratulating themselves on the Republican primary victory of one of their own, Richard Mourdock, over six-term Senate veteran Richard Lugar. But the rest of the country should be mourning the departure of the epitome of what Washington needs much more of: conscientious bipartisanship.

  17. Obama evolves, with a nudge from Biden

Vice President Joe Biden was accused of committing another gaffe the other day when he declared on a Sunday television talk showthat he was "absolutely comfortable" with the idea of same-sex marriage. His crime supposedly was that he embarrassed his boss, President Barack Obama, who was fence-straddling on the issue, saying only that his position was "evolving."

  21. Gay marriage and political expedience

Former NPR and current Fox News political analyst Juan Williamsmade an excellent point  recently on "The O'Reilly Factor." Mr. Williams said the major reason President Barack Obama had not endorsed same-sex marriage is because of the strong opposition to it in the black and Hispanic communities.

  23. 'Money primary' pushes Obama to the left

For most of 2012, President Barack Obama has been running in the Democratic primary. I know that seems odd, given that he's essentially running unopposed. Though don't tell that to West Virginia Democrats, who cast nearly half of their votes for Keith Judd, an inmate currently serving time in a Texarkana, Texas, prison. Mr. Judd received 41 percent of the vote. In 1968, Eugene McCarthy received 42 percent of the vote and forced incumbent Lyndon Johnsonfrom the race.
