  1. If the economy is so terrible, why is Obama winning?

It's the economy, stupid — or maybe not. President Barack Obama, with the help of congressional allies, has taken key issues that should be dooming him and turned them to his advantage.

  3. Tea party victories in Ind., Neb., are no boon to the Democrats

If it has accomplished nothing else, the tea party insurgency has made Republicans vastly more newsworthy than Democrats. While the party of the left plods along performing the boring old tasks of governing, the party of the right is engaged in high drama worthy of Shakespeare.

  5. Herman Cain is flunking the world's toughest job interview

You likely remember the 3 a.m. phone call.
You likely remember the 3 a.m. phone call. In 2008, the most effective line of attack his opponents mounted against candidate Barack Obama centered on the freshman senator's lack of experience. An ad for Hillary Clinton famously implied that you did not...

    DeJanee Fennell hears the excuses.
DeJanee Fennell hears the excuses. Young people are apathetic. Young people are sick of politics. Young people have given up. But Fennell doesn't buy that. The 20-year-old junior at Morgan State University knows President Barack Obama needs the youth...

  11. Political Notebook: Howard County Republicans rally in D.C. to repeal 'ObamaCare'

The 35 Howard County Republicans that bussed to Washington on March 24 did not let the rainy, dreary weather wash out their message. They are fed up with the Democratic leadership in Washington; they disagree with President Barack Obama's policies,...

  13. Should we care if Herman Cain had an affair?

Herman Cain, the business executive who was recently the leading Republican candidate for president, has dropped out of the race after allegations that he carried on a 13-year extramarital affair. Even though Mr. Cain says the accusations are untrue, as he denied previous claims that he had sexually harassed several women more than a decade ago, he was pushed by prominent members of his party, including former supporters, to quit the campaign.

  15. GOP presidential field outdoes itself again and again

Well, it's about time. At last we have a candidate with the guts to close down our embassy in Iran were she elected president. Thank you, Michele Bachmann. Oh — and thank you Jimmy Carter as well, since he closed down the embassy there in 1980 in response to the hostage crisis in Tehran at the time. That we have had no embassy in Iran in the last 31 years matters less than that Congresswoman Bachmann has the intestinal fortitude to come out against our having one there now. It is no wonder she was the darling of the tea party.

  19. Parkville's Hiss UM continues its two-decade Living Nativity tradition

It came to pass that the shepherds abided in the fields, the three kings traversed afar and the angelic hosts proclaimed the birth of infant Jesus.

Although the first voting for presidential delegates is still four days off in Iowa, the political crystal-ball gazers are already speculating which Republican candidates will survive and which will fall off the cliff into oblivion.

  23. Iowa, 2011: Here they come a-courting

In Iowan Meredith Willson's "The Music Man," Marian, the River City librarian, spends a lot of time looking for love, while pretending not to. In the end she does, in fact, find it, with a huckster — a man who may be slightly less than sincere. We naturally, and naively, assume it all works out for her, that her choice was sound, that her life will be perfect.
