  1. For Maryland Republicans, new messenger, same message

Maryland's House Republicans decided this week to jettison Del. Anthony J. O'Donnell from the leadership of their caucus on the grounds that a new messenger is needed to revitalize the party's prospects and pick up seats in the 2014 election. We wish new Minority Leader Nicholaus Kipke and new Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga the best of luck; Maryland is better when it has two functioning political parties. But color us skeptical that rearranging the deck chairs in the House GOP caucus is going to accomplish much.

  3. O'Malley's success echoes Mandel's 1972 triumph

Forty-one years ago, Maryland Gov. Marvin Mandel pulled off a series of staggering triumphs that The Sun compared to winning the Triple Crown: Maryland's first gun-control law; a unique, state-run auto insurance agency; and a higher gasoline tax to support Baltimore's first rapid rail line.

  5. O'Malley should clean house over jail scandal

I could not agree more with The Sun's editorial regarding Gov. Martin O'Malley and corruption in the city jail ("Spinning corruption," May 1). Governor O'Malley is running for higher office and is not taking responsibility for the corrections system corruption that has been going on for decades. Heads should roll and replacements be made, rather than allowing the current "leadership" to fix the system that is broken and needs rebuilding.

Gov. Martin O'Malley says the Netflix series "House of Cards" brought $140 million into the state's economy ("'Cards' a good deal, Md. Says," April 30). Where have we heard this before?

  11. Chief judge of Maryland Court of Appeals retiring

Maryland's highest-ranking judge, Robert M. Bell, likes that his courthouse is dedicated to his predecessor, pointing out that the letters etching Robert C. Murphy's name on the building's exterior are filled in gold paint to make sure even nighttime drivers can see it.

  15. Time editors discuss new book about presidents at McDaniel College

The four-story brownstone near Washington's Lafayette Park is one of the most exclusive hotels in the world. There's a fireplace in the master bathroom, and the thread counts on the sheets is high enough to rival the Four Seasons.

  19. Corrections reform never an O'Malley priority

With a straight face, the Maryland governor says the sex-and-drugs scandal at the Baltimore City Detention Center, including the alleged corruption of 13 corrections officers, is a "positive achievement." He claims his corrections secretary, Gary Maynard, established a state-federal task force to investigate the corrupting influence of the Black Guerrilla Family while some of the gang's members, including Tavon "I'm Your Daddy" White, were in the BCDC, a state-run facility.

  21. Black Guerrilla prison story putting national media pressure on O'Malley

Reviewing national media coverage of the Black Guerrilla Family's virtual takeover of the Baltimore City Detention Center, it's impossible not to feel the pressure mounting on Gov. Martin O'Malley who is expected to return this week from a trip to the Middle East.
