Highlights

The closest statewide election in modern Virginia history ended Dec. 21, 2005, when a recount validated the razor-thin margin of victory for Republican Robert F. McDonnell for the attorney general's seat. On election night Nov. 8, McDonnell appeared to win by about 3,000 votes over Democratic Sen. Creigh Deeds of Bath. But the official result was much closer -- a 323-vote margin out of more than 1.9 million votes cast.
