  1. Can we finally close the gun show loophole?

Whether it's the indelible horror of the massacre at Newtown, Conn., or the tone-deaf response of the National Rifle Association and its allies who have shown themselves so hysterical and paranoid on the subject of gun rights, the public's hunger for action on gun violence shows little sign of weakening.

Good morning and welcome to a fairly sleepy morning on the Internet. Twitter is mostly concerned with heady topics like Happy Hump Day and #ILoveMyPhone, but there are a few news stories bubbling up.

  5. Bob Dole and the GOP's disability

Much ink has been spilled in recent weeks criticizing the Republican Party and its failed presidential candidate for a lack of compassion and obvious antipathy toward "47 percent" of the electorate (if not a bit more), so it was reassuring to see two of its more prominent leaders offer a message of inclusion and uplift at a Jack Kemp Foundation dinner on Tuesday.

  7. Leonard Pitts: Better to lose with grace than to win with deceit

One guy was among the greatest losers in the history of politics, the other, one of the biggest winners in all of sports.
One guy was among the greatest losers in the history of politics, the other, one of the biggest winners in all of sports. They were unalike men who shared little except recent headlines. But there was, in that brief juxtaposition, an object lesson for...

  9. Mitt Romney has no future in the GOP

As if Mitt Romney's defeat weren't a cross enough to bear, the kind of campaign he ran could make him uniquely a man on the outside of his party looking in.

  11. Hopeful signs of reconciliation in hyper-partisan times

There have been a number of hopeful signs recently regarding the public's recognition of the value of reaching beyond partisan disagreement ("Nostalgia for the age of statesmen," Oct. 23). One comes from "the greatest generation," the other from a college...

  13. McGovern's death brings nostalgia for the age of statesmen

Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, a Republican, spoke at Johns Hopkins University last week. He mostly avoided partisan politics, instead focusing on the roles of China and technology in determining America's future. However, he did address his failed presidential campaign, noting that his serving as ambassador to China under President Barack Obama hurt his standing with conservatives. To thunderous applause, Mr. Huntsman said (and I paraphrase), "No matter your party, when your president calls on you to serve, you do it." This sentiment is anathema to many of our government officials today.

  15. Bartlett to skip GOP convention

Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett has become the latest incumbent in Congress to announce he will skip his party's national convention this year to spend time campaigning for reelection, drawing a contrast with other state Republicans as well as his Democratic challenger.

  17. What's in a name

A reporter inquires about the way we refer to U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, because his staff says that he prefers to be known as plain old Ben Cardin. (He's running for re-election.) Can we do that? Sure. We're easy. We accommodated Jimmy Carter and...

  19. This time with feeling: The GOP needs to do a retake on its debt limit rhetoric

A lot of conservatives are having fun at President Obama's expense after his latest gaffe. In the midst of testy debt-limit negotiations last week, Mr. Obama told House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, "Don't call my bluff."

  21. Democrats tighten U.S. Senate grip

    Chicago Tribune
The same Democratic wave that made history yesterday by electing Barack Obama to the presidency drowned Republicans in the House and Senate and seemed poised to give Democrats commanding power in Congress. Voters appeared to be looking for someone to...
