  1. $1 billion for new city schools: From non-starter to law

Baltimore schools chief Andrés Alonso went to Annapolis last year seeking approval for a bold $2 billion plan to replace many of the city system's crumbling buildings. The idea didn't even make it out of committee.

  3. The newest thing in Maryland horse racing: optimism

The Kentucky Derby winner and oddsmakers' favorite for the Preakness Stakes isn't exactly a Maryland horse, but he's close — Orb is partially owned by a Baltimore County businessman, and his sire spent some time in Harford County. Attendance at Saturday's races might or might not set an all-time record, but it's bound to be close — top-flight music acts, it seems, are a bigger draw than BYOB debauchery. The weather may not be perfect, but it will be close — the latest forecast is for a high of 72 but with a slight chance of showers. And it may not be the governor presenting the trophy to the winner — he has a family obligation — but it'll be close. Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown will be filling in. All in all, Saturday has the potential to be about as good a Preakness day as you'll see.

  5. A public service message to youth sports parents

The good news is that, in seven years of umpiring amateur baseball games in the Baltimore area, Frank Handley has had to give the thumb to only five adults. The bad news is he had to do it again a couple of weeks ago. But we're going to turn a negative into a positive today. We're going to get the message out — a reminder, really — that parents need to keep the ugly under control and set a good example for children.

  9. More to a candidate than campaign money or being a professional politician

<a href="http://bio.tribune.com/MichaelDresser">Michael Dresser</a>'s recent article, "Brown to launch run for governor" (May 10), was very troubling. For example, an implication is made that the only credible candidates in the election are those who have big, fat finance accounts. In addition, Mr. Dresser goes into speculative mode whereby he makes an assessment regarding who Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown's competitors might be. He suggests names of rivals that typify the aspirations of people who hold political office today &mdash; that is to say, career politicians who want to expand their personal power and fame.

  13. Maryland's model for gun regulation

Tomorrow, Gov. Martin O'Malley plans to sign into law the most comprehensive gun control legislation Maryland has seen in at least 25 years, a bill that will not only help guard against a mass shooting incident, like December's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but will also help fight the day-to-day violence that plagues Baltimore and other communities. The bill has become doubly important with the failure &mdash; at least for the moment &mdash; of attempts to tighten gun laws on the federal level, both because it will make Marylanders safer and because it can serve as a model for other states as they seek ways to address gun violence.

  17. Is Harbor Point the best deal we can get?

On Wednesday, Baltimore's Board of Estimates approved a property tax break that would save a typical homeowner $140 a year &mdash; good news, to be sure. But that may have failed to impress many Baltimoreans in light of Monday's decision by the city's Board of Finance to endorse $107 million in tax increment financing for the Harbor Point development that is slated to become the eventual Baltimore home of Constellation Energy's new owner, Exelon.

  23. Baltimore mayor officiates at lobbyist wedding in Vegas

One thing that happened in Vegas last week certainly won't stay in Vegas: The lobbyists Lisa Harris Jones and Sean Malone were married there before about 100 well-wishers, who included some of Maryland's top government officials &mdash; including the wedding officiant, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
