  1. Time to abolish Electoral College

A recent Baltimore Sun article, "Election remake hits hurdles," (Jan. 29) brings to light new thoughts on how to change the rules of the Electoral College. At the present time, all states use the winner-take-all system except two, Maine and Nebraska. These states allow a proportional electoral vote based on their congressional districts.

  3. Relentless swing-state focus paid off for Obama

In the aftermath of President Barack Obama's near-sweep of the critical Electoral College swing states last month, post-election analysis of the keys to his decisive victory has paid scant attention to one important factor: Mr. Obama's disproportionate focus on swing states began soon after his inauguration and continued throughout his term in office.

  5. Presidential campaign 'legitimately' toxic?

I am so relieved that I don't live in a swing state.
I am so relieved that I don't live in a swing state. I can sleep through Nov. 6 and wake up knowing that Maryland's Electoral College votes will be safely in President Barack Obama's pocket — or Gov. Martin O'Malley will be in witness protection....

  7. Electoral College a legacy of slavery

The "Making presidential elections fairer" commentary (Nov. 17) omits that the Electoral College is another legacy of slavery. The compromise of 1787, the counting of slaves as three-fifths of a person in determining the number of representatives in...

  9. Spare us more politics-as-sport

As a septuagenarian (and Democrat), I was happy that President Barack Obama won re-election, but sad that the morning-after TV news shows reported the win as "the election results validated the Obama team's game plan," rather than the election was the...

  11. The Electoral College is immoral

Regardless of Election Day's results, it's time to call the Electoral College what it truly is — immoral. Obtaining equal voting rights has been a struggle in the United States since our inception. We immorally excluded women and entire ethnicities....

  13. In Carroll County, voters warm up to a cool election day

It was almost anti-climactic at the polls in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.
It was almost anti-climactic at the polls in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon. After a year of robo-calls, tons of campaign literature, debates and nonstop news coverage, election day came to Carroll County — and the turnout was heavy and steady....

  15. What will the liberal media do if Obama loses the popular vote but wins the Electoral College?

I have a bet with a friend that if President Obama wins re-election in the Electoral College but loses the popular vote, all the raging against the Electoral College in the print and broadcast media will immediately cease. Within three months, you won't...

  17. How to fix the Electoral College

Ohio, Virginia, Florida: If you don't live in one of these or a few other "battleground" states, you may feel disenfranchised in U.S. presidential elections. As a Marylander, no major party candidate competes for your vote — even if the nationwide...

  19. Hillary in 2012? It could happen

A number of news reports have suggested the possibility of the presidential election ending in a draw — both candidates garnering 269 electors. You need 270 to win.

  21. Fundraiser in chief

As President Barack Obama recently headlined the last of a record-breaking number of fundraisers for his reelection bid, it is important to understand that the extraordinary rise in presidential fundraising efforts in recent decades is an unintended consequence of our campaign finance system and that these dynamics are changing the ways that presidents allocate their most precious resource for both campaigning and governing: their time.

  23. Eagle Archive: For people who want to make history, Election Day is your chance

As the 2012 presidential campaign soldiers on toward its final days, no one seems at a loss for an opinion on the outcome. Since 2010 in Maryland, we don't have to wait until the first Tuesday in November to vote. Early voting centers — in...
