3. 'Money primary' pushes Obama to the left

For most of 2012, President Barack Obama has been running in the Democratic primary. I know that seems odd, given that he's essentially running unopposed. Though don't tell that to West Virginia Democrats, who cast nearly half of their votes for Keith Judd, an inmate currently serving time in a Texarkana, Texas, prison. Mr. Judd received 41 percent of the vote. In 1968, Eugene McCarthy received 42 percent of the vote and forced incumbent Lyndon Johnsonfrom the race.

5. Legislation would give state voters more political gift information

In more than 30 states, if a corporate chieftain were to ask top executives to contribute to a politician, an inquisitive voter could easily learn that the firm was bankrolling the candidate.

7. When elephants fight

The last thing you'd think Maryland's Republican party needs would be a nasty internecine fight, but that's what it got at its annual convention over the weekend. Rather than unity in the effort to overcome a massive voter registration disadvantage, chronic fundraising problems and a frequent lack of competitive candidates for state-wide offices, the party became focused on a divisive race for an obscure position: national committeewoman. In the end, Audrey Scott, a GOP stalwart who has held a variety of elected and appointed posts, including a stint as state Republican chairwoman, was defeated by a heretofore little known, 37-year-old Baltimore woman, Nicolee Ambrose. Surprisingly, though, this development may actually be a positive sign for those who dream that Maryland could have a viable two-party system.

Donors at Howard County Executive Ken Ulman's May 10 fundraiser in Fulton will not be the only people meeting rapper and DJ Biz Markie. Ulman, too, for the first time will meet the artist behind the famous comedic hip hop song, "Just a Friend." "I've got...

11. John Edwards: Here's a man who could have used a Super PAC

The more I read about John Edwards' shenanigans during the 2008 presidential campaign, the more I'm convinced he is a mirror-gazing, fork-tongued, tramp-chasing weasel. But the more I read about the federal case against him, the more sure I am that he does not deserve to go to jail.

13. One loophole down, 24 to go

This afternoon, Gov.Martin O'Malleyplans to sign what may be the most significant step toward increasing transparency in Maryland's system of campaign finance in years: a requirement that those who contribute more than $500 to a single candidate during an election cycle list their occupation and employer. That's a good thing; it will give the public a much better idea of who is backing candidates for office and why. However, the fact that this step only brings Maryland up to some semblance of the standard the federal government has employed since the 1970s, and a majority of other states have long held as well, shows just how far the state has to go if voters are to have confidence that the entire campaign finance system isn't just a means for special interests to buy influence.

15. How The Sun traced the Election Night robocalls

The number was untraceable - almost.
The number was untraceable - almost. On Election Night in 2010, The Baltimore Sun's switchboard lit up with reports of a suspicious "robocall": it told voters to relax, that President Obama and Gov.Martin O'Malley had been successful, and that there...

17. Tough decisions have marked Anderson's 18-month tenure in College Park

The first months of a college athletic director's tenure are typically spent getting a feel for the landscape. For Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson, his first seven months included leading a major overhaul that included the messy divorce with a popular football coach who also happens to be an alum and the sudden retirement of one of the country's most respected men's basketball coaches.

21. Romney addresses aide's misstep during visit to Maryland

Making what should have been a victory lap through Maryland on Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was forced to defend his conservative credentials after an aide referred to his campaign as an "Etch A Sketch" that could be shaken up and erased for the general election in November.
