Latinos, Asian-Americans underrepresented in NY Legislature

New York is like much of the nation at large when it comes to the representation of minority groups in state legislatures.

Census figures from 2014 and other data reviewed by The Associated Press show the roster of 213 lawmakers is whiter than the state's population. Latinos are significantly underrepresented. And the proportion of blacks in the Capitol mirrors the population.

White lawmakers hold 74 percent of the seats in the Senate and Assembly while the state's population is 56 percent white. Latinos, the fastest-growing community, account for 19 percent of the state population but only 8 percent of lawmakers. Blacks make up just more than 14 percent of the population,...
