I read with interest Jules Witcover's column about the Democrats' presidential prospects ("If not Hillary, how about Joe?" Aug. 4). He concluded that Vice President Joe Biden "is a good alternative presidential candidate for the Democrats" in 2016. Wrong! If history is a guide, the last person the Democrats should nominate if Ms. Clinton doesn't run is a sitting vice-president. While a number of vice-presidents have ascended to the presidency following a president's death, since 1800 only two sitting vice-presidents — Martin Van Buren in 1836 and George H.W.
