United scaling back loan bid

United Airlines hopes to receive a conditional loan guarantee from the federal government this week that would be about $500 million less than the carrier has been seeking. The Air Transportation Stabilization Board rejected United's bid for a $1.6 billion loan guarantee last week, but sources close to the talks said Monday that the nation's second-largest carrier is working to submit modifications for a smaller loan guarantee.
