GOP's Mooney makes comeback in West Virginia

Republican Alex Mooney, who left Maryland after losing his seat in the Maryland Senate in 2010, made a political comeback Tuesday in his new state of West Virginia by winning a seat in Congress.

Mooney, one of the most conservative members of the state Senate during his 12 years there, beat Democrat Nick Casey by a 47-44 percent margin. Despite charges that he was a "carpetbagger" in his new home, Mooney seized the seat previously held by Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, who won a U.S. Senate seat.

The victory will reunite Mooney with his ideological soulmate, Maryland U.S. Rep Andy Harris, who won the state's First District seat in 2010. The two men entered the...
