GOP opts for nominating convention in 5th District

Republicans in Virginia's 5th District will choose their nominee for Congress in a convention instead of an open primary.

The Daily Progress reports ( ) that the district's GOP committee voted 19-16 Saturday in favor of a convention. The convention is set for May 14.

Five candidates have announced they will seek the GOP nomination to succeed Republican U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt, who has announced he won't seek re-election. They are Andrew Griffin, state Sen. Tom Garrett, Jim McKelvey, Michael Del Rosso and Joseph Whited.
