June 29 Letters: Confederate battle flag

It is disappointing to read reports of former Sen. Jim Webb's statement (– "Former Virginia senator defends Confederate flag," June 25) that "... our complex multicultural society is founded on the principle of mutual respect." Webb is a good man and I have always appreciated his candor, even bluntness, in stating the truth. But this statement is flat wrong. A country cobbled together starting with the Declaration of Independence in July 1776 that culminated in the Constitution of 1789 had the institution of slavery and the limit of the franchise to white property, owning males, the very epitome of lack of mutual respect, enshrined in it legally.
