Edith M. "Edie" Patterson, a former St. Paul's School educator, died Aug. 1 of an autoimmune disease at The Highlands, a retirement community in Topsham, Maine. The longtime Homeland resident was 81. The daughter of an insurance executive and a homemaker, Edith Melcher was born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in West Hartford, Conn., where she graduated in 1949 from William H. Hall High School. After graduating in 1952 with a bachelor's degree from Central Connecticut State University, Mrs. Patterson began her teaching career in West Hartford, where she met the Rev.
