Erasing the past

Statues are more than stones in the ground; they serve to remind us of our history, both the good and the bad ("Baltimore City commission recommends removal of two Confederate monuments," Jan. 14).

Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir once said that "one cannot, and must not, try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present."

The Civil War was fought over states' rights, a point we are still arguing today. One studies history so that the mistakes of the past are learned from rather than repeated.
