'Women: Reflect, Rejoice, Reform' exhibit opens Sunday in East Jordan

"The theme of this show has been a challenge to the artist," said Yasmin Richmond of Norwood, curator of the exhibit. "Women have so much to celebrate given the successes and accomplishment of the individual women, and yet look around us and we know that we have a long struggle ahead and many issues still to overcome. We are excited by the number of artists who have risen to the challenge and the variety of medium chosen through which they have expressed themselves -- painting, three-dimensional art, poetry and song."
Refreshments will be served at Sunday's opening reception and guests will have the opportunity to meet many of the exhibiting artists. Other times to view the show can be arranged by calling Ruth Hoppe at (231) 599-2798.
"Women: Reflect, Rejoice, Reform" will run through Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Jordan River Art Center. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Events planned in conjunction with the show include:
-- Performance Art in Action with music, poetry and storytelling 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Charlevoix library
-- A lecture, "Unexpected Sources of Power," a case study of women on Beaver Island, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Charlevoix library
-- Journaling and collage workshops, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., respectively, Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Torch Lake Township Hall, Eastport.
