February is Snack Food Month. Anyone in need may snack at Grace Place Serving Center at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 N. Union Ave., 410-939-2107, for its regular Tuesday luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Feb. 25. Volunteers will provide a free, hot meal to those in need who enter.
Brigitte Peters, at the Office of Tourism, and I are making the parade list for the March 4 Mardi Gras Parade, 6:30 p.m. down Bourbon Street from the high school, to Washington Street into downtown, ending on St. John Street at Legion Square and David Craig Park at Lafayette's Statue. Laissez les bons temps roulez. Grab some beads or doubloons! The party continues at downtown restaurants and taverns. Thirty-one Krewes have already signed to participate. February is National Polar Bear Day. The Susquehanna Hose Company volunteers sponsored a successful equivalent polar bear/duck dunk in January. You can celebrate the day by hugging and snuggling with your favorite polar bear, but make sure it's plush and lovable; the real polar bears aren't prone to snuggling.
February 28 is Floral Design Day. So stop by Amanda's Florist, 203 N. Washington St., 410-939-5403, to treat yourself to a bouquet of daffodils for the Welsh, St. David's Day, March 1.
Carol Zimmerman phoned about the Havre de Grace Green Team Community Gardens. With the City of Havre de Grace's support, four garden sites around the city are available to rent. Konnichiwha, and congratulations to the Lin family for the opening of Lin's Hibachi, 1007 Pulaski Highway offering Japanese cuisine – sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, tempura – and Thai dishes at eight hibachi grills. The Lin family is well established in Havre de Grace, having owned the China Kitchen for 23 years. Arigato for this new dining adventure.
The MasquerAid Ball is planned for Saturday, March 1, 6 to 10 p.m. at the Vandiver Inn. This Mardi Gras Ball will benefit the Opera House Foundation. A costumed event with music and dancing, auction and local food; tickets are available at the Havre de Grace Visitor Center, 410-939-2100. Also vote for the Mardi Gras King and Queen for the March 4 parade.
The Good Shepherd Catholic School will sponsor a spring gala at the Wellwood Restaurant in Charlestown, March 8, 6 to 11 p.m. "Join us for a night to remember" with dinner, open bar, music and dancing, live and silent auctions; semi-formal attire. Jim Dryden and Bethany Baker sold me the first ticket to the Concord Point Lighthouse second St. Patty's Day celebration and fundraiser, Thursday, March 13, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Vandiver Inn, Union Avenue, Havre de Grace. Marcy Boyle informed me about the Havre de Grace Lions Club bull, shrimp and oyster roast for Saturday, March 15, 5:30-10 p.m. at the Havre de Grace Community Center, 100 Lagaret Lane. Tickets cost $45 at 443-417-4839. Fast Eddie's will cater the foods; with Bruster's providing free ice cream. Proceeds benefit the Lions charities.
A St. Patrick Irish dinner is planned Sunday, March 16, 2 to 5 p.m., St. Patrick Hall, Pennington Avenue, with Irish music, dancers and a traditional Irish meal.
