I love seeing our youth show the world that they have a lot of heart and compassion, don't you? The Youth Mission Team at Emmanuel United Methodist Church is working hard to be able to go to Bahamas, but instead of a vacation of snorkeling and lying by the pool, the 27 members of the team of high school students and adults will be working hard fixing up houses and building ramps for those in need.

The Bahamas, like many Caribbean countries, have a great tourist area, but beyond that is a very poor country in need of help. It is a great place to go so that the youth team can learn about another culture and to learn the value of helping.

They will be working with an organization called Team Effort. In order to raise funds for this trip, they will be holding a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Tuesday. Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. They will have pancakes, sausage, spiced apples and drinks.

Reservoir High is holding their next free Gator Academy Feb. 26 at the Savage Branch Library, 1:30-3:30 p.m. They will also be holding two in March on the 4th and 18th. Email Kris Kendall at KrisKendall@verizon.net for more information.

Do not forget that Saturday, Feb. 18 is the family night at the movies at the North Laurel Community Center and "G.I. Joe" starts at 6 p.m. Cost is $2 for members and $4 for nonmembers 5 and older. This includes a popcorn and drink and you must register by calling 410-313-0390.

The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County is now taking applications for their residential summer camp for girls that will be entering eighth and ninth grades next fall. Journey 2012 will be held June 24 to June 30 and will have a week long program of workshops and other activities.

Applicants should have some experience in leadership, be willing to try new experiences and have a desire to help their community. The cost is $600 and financial aid requests must be postmarked by March 17 and applications by March 30.

Charity's Closet is moving downstairs in the Savage Mill starting March 2. They are looking for donations of old chandeliers or dress forms for the new shop.
